Her father took second place always in her narrative, though he was a most delightful companion - very clever and full of wit, a great reader, and it was his habit to read aloud in the evenings, while the family sat around the fire, each one with some appointed task. The elder girls sewed, while all the children had their baskets of cotton to pick, for in those days the gin had not been invented and the seed had to be carefully picked from the cotton by hand! It would seem a weary task to us, but they regarded it as a game, and ran races as to who should pick the most during the long winter evenings while my grandfather read Milton, Wordsworth, Shakespeare, and other masters of literature. When one contrasts those evenings, those influences on the minds of children with the amusements and diversions deemed necessary to the young of the present day, one does not wonder at the pleasure loving race we are becoming.

Housekeeping according to the usual conception of it, is that estimable art which, by contributing in various effective ways to neatness, order, coziness, and unobtrusive elegance, produces the choicest type of a home. The word housekeeping, however may have another significance seldom used or thought of, for the good reason that the precise conditions to which it is applicable are extremely rare, at least in this country, where the rapid development of a rather migratory people has been attended by frequent moving days and constant casting aside of the old for the new. Housekeeping, in this other and rarer significance means, not simply keeping a house neat, orderly, cozy and elegant, but keeping it just as it has been kept for over a hundred years, and keeping in it, in the same places, and using daily, those things which have been used by the family for a century, some of them for over two centuries.

It applies only to that house in which every day the grandmother of today sits down to the same dining table at which her grandparents sat when they came into the house not long after their honeymoon trip of over a century ago, and, indeed, sits in the very same chairs that they sat in and the same that their ancestors sat in a century before that, or in those early colonial times when those who battled with the hard conditions of life either made great characters or died young. This kind of housekeeping therefore is that which not only keeps a house as it ought to be kept, but keeps it as it has always been kept.

He married Ida Lois Elderkin daughter of Dyer White Elderkin and Lois (King) Elderkin, 11 Aug 1877 in PA. He died 25 Mar 1925 while traveling. He died at the Hotel Green, Pasadena, California and is buried in Grave 12 Lot 2172 of Mountain View Cemetery, Pasadena, Orange County, CA.

They were the parents of three known children: Murray Heller Warren Jr; Laura Blanche Warren wife of O. H. Berryman; Sarah/Sadie Lois Warren wife of William Levis Judson (the one whose bridal portrait was restored).

He is my great great grandfather.

His body is being sent to Houston. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Josephine Richmond of Houston; one grandson; two brothers, Robert and Cecil Berryman of Houston; two sisters, Mrs. Mark Lang of Port Arthur and Mrs. Frank Hall of San Antonio.

They say pictures can tell a thousand words. Here are some of the interesting things I noticed in this picture:

The framed aerial photo on the wall is of the Gulf Oil Refining Company in Port Arthur, Texas of which Murray was Superintendent from 1901 (Spindletop) to 1907.
The pin he is wearing is an elk pin. He was a long time member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks.
The calendar on the wall is in Spanish. He left Texas in March 1907 to work for the then Waters-Pierce Oil Company in Mexico. August 3rd fell on a Tuesday (Martes) in 1909 hence the approximate date of the photo.

Restore My Name: Slave Records and Genealogy Research, CoAAG, 1st Edition

I am very excited to participate in the 1st Edition of the Carnival of African-American Genealogy! Special thank you from the bottom of my heart goes out to Luckie, author of the Our Georgia Roots blog. It is through her passion and vision that I come to offer my contribution. Her insight and open dialog have brought me to a place of new understanding and has set me on a new path and mission. You can read my emotional response to her Open Letter to the Genealogy Community here.

The theme for the first edition addresses how records of slave ownership are handled by the genealogy researcher. Before the open dialog on Luckie's blog I had no idea that the slave information I had in my files (minimal so I thought) could very well be the missing piece of the puzzle for a fellow researcher. Even if that researcher never comes across it in my lifetime, what power I have to be able to honor a life, restore a name, and remember a soul.

Here is my first act of genealogical kindness regarding slave documents. Though not random, I pray it has perfect timing!

Last Will and Testament of Cager Creel

I Cager Creel of the County of Adair & State of Kentucky hereby make & publish this my last Will & Testament hereby revoking all other wills heretofore made by me, 1st I will & direct that all my past debts be paid and for the purpose of raising a fund for that purpose I direct my Executors herein after named to sell all of my personal estate not otherwise disposed of & if necessary my Slaves & my Lands, on Such terms as they may think best, 2nd I will & bequeath to my beloved wife Amanda A. Creel during her life or widowhood or until my youngest child becomes 20 years of age one third of my personal property consisting of horses cattle hogs farming tools [sc] also all my Negros and all my lands which are not herein otherwise disposed of to be used by her for the purpose of Supporting her & raising & educating my infant children (viz) Nancy J. Creel, Ann J. Creel, Eliza D. Creel, William T. Creel, & Timoleon C. Creel, and when my youngest child becomes 20 years of age I then direct that my wife Shall have one third of my lands & Slaves during her natural life or widowhood the other two thirds to be disposed of as herein after directed, but said property is to be under the controll of my executors to be used for the purposes aforesaid, 3rd If I Should survive my wife, I direct my Executors to Sell all my personal property as soon as it is advisable to do so, and I also direct that my Negros be hired out by my Executors (privately to good humane masters) and my land rented out by them until my youngest child arrives at the age of twenty years,
5th I will & direct that my five infant children herein before named be educated out of my estate and also supported & clothed until they arrive to the age of twenty years or marry and I direct my Executors to use the interest on any money in their hands arising from the Sales of the personal estate hire of Slaves & rents of lands for this purpose if the interest in not sufficient then so much of the principal of said fund as may be necessary,
6th I have heretofore given to my daughters Mary M. Grady & P E Atkins each a horse Saddle birdle [sc] and I hereby give & bequeath to my Son Thos Jefferson Creel my young gray mare a Saddle bridle & my watch and direct my executors to send him to school for twelve months & board & clothe him for that time which will make him equal with my two Said daughters and I direct that these three of my children Shall have nothing more out of my estate until my other children are made equal with them, 7th when my youngest child arrives at the age of twenty years I then direct my Executors to give to each of my five infant children (viz) Wm T Creel, Timoleon C. Creel, Nancy Jane Creel, Ann J. Creel & Eliza D. Creel, a horse Saddle bridle & cow each,
I further direct that when my youngest child arrives at the age of twenty years my executors to sell all my property of every kind (except the third heretofore given to my wife) if she should then be alive & a widow, & if not alive and a widow to Sell all of my property) and after paying the Special devises herein before made, to divide the residue equally among all my children or their heirs, so as to make all my children equal in my estate.
8th If it should be necessary to sell any of my negros to pay my debts. I direct that my negro boy Samuel be sold first my boy Creed next and my negro girl next & then my old negro man Solomon, I further direct that when my negro man Solomon is sold or hired that he be allowed to select his home if he can do so,
9th I hereby direct my Executors that if any of my negros Should at any time become unruly or vicious to sell them if they think best to do so,
10th I hereby authorize & empower my Executors to convey any of my property they may sell as herein directed by deed or otherwise and I further authorize and empower my Executors to convey any land I may have Sold and not conveyed,
11th at the death of my wife if she does not die before my youngest child arrives at the age of twenty years I direct my Executors to sell the third of my estate herein given to her & dispose of it as I have herein directed the residue of my estate to be disposed of,
12th If my Executors Shall at any time before my youngest child becomes twenty years of age think that it is best & to the interest of my estate to sell any or all of my Slaves I direct them to do so, & hold & dispose of the proceeds of the Sales as I have directed herein,
13th I hereby make nominate constitute & appoint James Yates and James Garnett Executors of this my last will & testament and request them to see that the provisions of this will are fully carried out.

"Let's do what we do best, Scoob!" Mystery at the Corner of Brown and Hess (1879)

I recently found the location of my great great grandparents' 1879 residence in Dayton, Ohio. The home was listed at the "corner of Brown and Hess" in the obituary found in the Dayton Journal newspaper for their son, Charles Raymond Judson. You can read about it here: Remember Microfilm? Google Maps shows a building still standing at the corner of Brown and Hess; could that be the Judson home still standing? Time to investigate:

Question: What kind of neighborhood is it today? Are these new or historical buildings?

Gameplan: Look for obvious clues

Google Search "Oregon Park Dayton OH"

=====>Result: The home is located in the Oregon Historic District and they have a website with newsletters, photos, and history of the district!

Google Maps: Local Business Search - I want to talk to someone nearby who can tell me about the neighborhood and if the building is currently a private residence. Perfect businesses to locate are Bed and Breakfasts, Churches, and Libraries. I have also called a gas station and a restaurant before. Everyone has always been receptive to my humorous, out-of-the blue inquires.

=====>Result: Wonderful conversation with the owner of the INN PORT BED and BREAKFAST right down the street from the property. She was extremely friendly and offered as much information as she could about the building and the district. The building at the NE corner of Brown and Hess houses apartments - address 128-130 Brown Street. There used to be a school at the SE corner of Brown and Hess (where the park is now).

=====>Result: The building matches the architecture of the other buildings on the street. It is definitely not recent construction. It might be too large to have been a single family residence in 1879.

Question: Is this the same building that was standing there in 1879?

Call in the Calvary: Do I have any genea-friends that either live near or research the Dayton, OH area?

=====>Result: YES! The amazing geneablogger and twitter friend Lori, author of Genealogy and Me commented on a post of mine a few weeks back inquiring about the location of my great great grandparents' home in Dayton since that was her hometown. Perfect! Little Miss Wonderful soon emailed me photos of the property and data that she had researched on the county tax office website. She also showed me where to find photos of the neighborhood buildings on the Oregon Historic District website which I had previously missed. She also mentioned that there was a Great Flood of 1913 in Dayton which later turned out to be a great clue!

=====>Result: If the Judson house was located at the NE corner of Brown and Hess in 1879 it was not located in the building that currently stands there which was built in 1920. They would have lived on the lot identified by Parcel ID R72 01509 0052. After the Great Flood of 1913 in Dayton, several buildings were razed and new structures took their place.

Question: The 1880 Federal Census lists the Judsons living on 4th street. Did they move after the deaths of their children or could the funeral have been held in the home of a relative? Who lived at the corner of Brown and Hess in 1880? 1879?

Gameplan: Identify primary resources from that time period that can provide an address.

Dayton City Directory 1880-81: Online at Ancestry.com: Proudfoot and Urquhart's Directory of Dayton and Montgomery County 1880-81 [Okay this was not indexed, but I knew the answer was in there so I spent my Sunday afternoon reading every entry on every page until......]

=====>Result: BINGO! Henry C. Eversole resided at the NE corner of Brown and Hess in 1880.

So where are Lewis and Helen? They are listed as boarding at the Phillips house [on 4th Street].

Just to cover all the bases, the SE Corner of Brown and Hess housed an Intermediate school in 1880 The Dayton Metro Library website states that the Newcom school was "built in 1838" so the Judson residence had to be located on the NE corner.

Summary: Lewis and Helen Judson resided at the corner of Brown and Hess in Dayton, Ohio Dec 1879 according to the Obituary of their son Charles Raymond Judson published in the Dayton Daily Journal Newspaper December 27, 1879 Vol. XVII. NO. 130 Column Six. Sometime within the year 1880 the Judson's relocated to the Phillips boarding house on 4th Street in Dayton. One can only speculate as to what prompted the move: doctors bills and burial costs or just painful memories? The 1880 Dayton City Directory shows a school located at the SE corner of Brown and Hess and a residence (Henry C. Eversole) at the NE corner. The Dayton Library website states that the Newcom school was built in 1838 hence the only possible location of residence for the Judson's was at the Northeast corner. The Montgomery County Ohio Real Estate Tax Information System shows Parcel ID R72 01509 0052 (30' x 99.17') located at the NE corner of Brown and Hess. The building currently standing at the NE corner of Brown and Hess was built in 1920 and is not the same building in which Judsons lived.

Da...da...da! Da...da...da! THIS is HistoryCenter! Tomorrow's match-up between the Geneabloggers and the Snooty Patooties is going to be absolutley phenomenal! I've got to be honest here, everyone's favorite is the powerhouse Geneabloggers team. Here's the lineup:

Offensive Line (5 players whose job it is to block the opposing team's defense or as I like to say the Fab Five) - Joan, Roots 'n' Leaves; Sharon, Kindred Footprints; Sara Beth, Lessons from My Ancestors; Gini, Ginisology; and Nancy, My Ancestors and Me.
Quarterback (leader of the offense and calls the plays) - Thomas MacEntee, Destination: Austin Family and Geneabloggers.
Running back (specializes in running the ball) - Caroline, Family Stories.
Wide Receivers (specialize in catching passes) - Lori, Genealogy and Me; Amy Coffin, We Tree.
Tight Ends - (catching and blocking, most versatile players) - Sandra Taliaferro, I Never Knew My Father; Dr Bill Smith, Dr. Bill Tells Ancestor Stories.
Defensive Line (first line of defense) - Whitney Claire, MyNeChimKi; Bill West, West in New England; Greta, Greta's Genealogy Blog; Sherry, Family Tree Writer.
Linebackers (the heavy hitters/ all the tackling) - Randy Seaver, Genea-Musings; Luckie, Our Georgia Roots; Debbie Blanton McCoy, Blanton Family Roots and Branches.
Defensive Backs (they also got your back) - Mavis, Georgia Black Crackers and Conversations with My Ancestors; Astrid, Of Trolls and Lemons; Jenna, Desperately Seeking Surnames; Tcasteel, Tangled Trees.

This is a true DREAM TEAM of professionals! The Snooty Patooties better watch out!

There's no need to even go into the other team's lineup; they know who they are. They are known to hang out at local libraries and genealogy societies. They have a reputation of shutting out anyone who doesn't fit their archaic stereotype of what they think a family historian should be. Snooty Patooties are known to discriminate against age, race, and technology. There is no way they will ever win against the Geneabloggers, but never fear when another one bites the dust the Geneabloggers will be sure to record it accurately!

**Please Note: My argument is against Snootie Patooties not Genealogy Societies. Genealogy Societies are extremely important and I respect each and every person that so selflessly gives their time and talents to a GREAT endeavor!**

Tombstone Tuesday - Ola Mae Perkins Hogan (1986)

Ola Mae Perkins was born to Sidney Leander and Ora Alberta (Blanton) Perkins on 10 Sept 1900 in Cass County, Texas. She married Otis Oscar Wells on 11 Aug 1915 in Cass County Texas. She was only 14 years old (he was 19). Her only son, Horace Vaughn Wells, was born less than 7 months later on 03 Mar 1916. She went on to have one more child, a daughter named Ruth in 1919. Later, Otis and Ola parted ways. She married seven times over the course of her life but Pop Hogan was her one true love. At the age of 40 she married Edward James Hogan, on 24 May 1941. Their 12 year marriage was parted by his death on 10 Nov 1953. Following subsequent marriages she always returned to carry the surname Hogan. Nearly fifty years after his death they were reunited on 29 Jun 1986. His surname graces her headstone: Ola Mae Perkins Hogan.

What a wonderful surprise! Joan, author of Roots 'n' Leaves has awarded me "A Blogger's Best Friend" award. What an honor to be picked by someone who exemplifies all the qualities of a Blogger's Best Friend herself! I always look forward to reading her well-written, entertaining posts. She is a very supportive and encouraging member of the geneablogging community! Thank you, Joan!

The developer of the award 'Bandit' "A Blogger's Best Friend Award" says it shall be given to your most loyal blog readers. Thus, the award should be given to a follower of yours who takes the time to comment regularly on many of your posts. In addition his or her blog should be creative, funny and always entertaining. Upon receiving this award, pass it along to two fellow bloggers who fit this criteria.

This entire blogging community has been such a blessing to my life. I have found so many wonderful, encouraging friends who (to my surprise) love this stuff as much as I do! Laughing with joy, I like to tell my mom, "I have found my flock!" There are SO many who fit this award's criteria. It is really hard to just choose two!

My choices for this award are Caroline, author of Family Stories; and Nancy, author of My Ancestors and Me. Both ladies fit this criteria perfectly. They are both so supportive and encouraging. They are authors of wonderful blogs that I enjoy reading every morning over a cup of coffee - great way to start the day! Thank you, Caroline and Nancy, for all your comments and companionship!

While I was choosing two friends to receive this award I came across some friends who had also honored me with this award. What a great surprise, but I must admit I wish I had gotten to them first! Both of these ladies exemplify the characteristics of this award and are great blogging friends! They are: Lori, author of Genealogy and Me; and Sharon, author of Kindred Footprints. Thank you both very much!
